A diesel particulate filter (DPF) is a filter that captures and stores exhaust soot in order to reduce emissions from diesel cars.

However, the filter has only a limited capacity to collect the soot and therefore has to be emptied or 'burned off' to regenerate the DPF.

This done automatically by your car in normal driving without you needing to do anything.
